A Few Months After The Brannon Farm Battle.

SOLDIER Facility.

Fourteen Year Old Derrick Blackburn hit the mat hard but bounced right back with a kip-up to spring back to his feet. He advanced on his father and threw a straight punch aimed at his chest but his father simply deflected it aside. Undeterred, Derrick came at him with a Yamazuki Double Pucnh with one aimed at his face and the other aimed at his stomach though Leo was able to catch both punches and push him aside. Derrick used the momentum and brought his leg up in a roundhouse kick aimed at his father's face but he simply dodged it. Derrick turned with it, stomped down and he kicked at his stomach but Leo side stepped it. Derrick came at him again with a series of punches he mixed up at his chest and stomach but he simply backed up while blocking them and deflecting them aside until Derrick went for a spinning kick aimed at his father's head that he again dodged, then Derrick spun again and kicked at his stomach which Leo blocked and shoved aside, then Derrick spun again and went for a leg sweep that Leo stepped over. Derrick got back up and ran up and leaped in the air for a couple of kicks from both legs that Leo blocked. Derrick landed and stepped in for a few rapid fire elbow strikes at his father's face. Leo simply blocked them before he grabbed Derrick and threw him down to the mat. Leonardo Blackburn chuckled and sat down next to him.

"Not bad, son, not bad. You almost had me a couple of times."

"Come on, dad. I couldn't even touch you. Again." Derrick pouted while sitting up.

"Ah you did fine." Leo assured his son. "It's only natural though since I have more experience than you. But don't worry. You'll get there. I had to put my body through hell for years before I became as good as I am." He ruffled Derrick's hair. "You have a real talent for martial arts too so don't doubt yourself."

"Yeah, thanks dad."

"So are you ready to go again?"

"Oh yeah."

"Great. We'll go a few more rounds and then have a water break before proceeding to the obstacle course and then to weights. Cool?"

"Sounds like fun to me." Derrick agreed as his father helped him up. He took a breather and then he and his father bowed to each other and their sparring match began anew.

"You're going down this time, dad!"

Derrick taunted him and unleashed a flurry of kicks on him. Derrick advanced on Leo and then he balanced on one leg and he began kicking up at his chest and head repeatedly but Leo blocked them so Derrick switched to his other leg and unleashed a kick from that but Leo blocked that as well. So Derrick went for a machine gun side kick. Leo blocked a few of them until he grabbed his leg and shoved him back. Derrick stopped himself and laughed before coming back at him a jumping crescent kick that Leo dodged, a low sweep he stepped over, and then a tornado 540 kick that he dodged, two spinning hook kicks that Leo blocked, a Guyver coin drop kick that he dodged while Derrick landed on his back and then he kicked back up and continued his attack. He went after him again with double kick that Leo blocked, then Derrick dropped down and tried to sweep his leg, stood back up, kick at his mid-section which Leo dodged and then he tried to kick at his head which Leo also dodged. Derrick switched it up and he rushed his father, leaped into the air, grabbed onto his father's head and tried to drive his knee into his dad only for him to block Derrick's knee strike with one hand and shove him back with the other! Derrick flew across the mat, landed on it and skidded back a few feet before he stopped himself. He rushed his father again and leaped into the air and over his father's head! He landed a few feet behind him, turned back around and performed a flying jumping side kick aimed at his father's head. Leo however caught him by his ankle but Derrick had expected this and he kicked out with his free leg but Leo deflected his kick to the side, grabbed his ankle and then he flung his son aside.

Derrick flew fifteen feet away and he slammed down on the mat, rolled across it and then he quickly sprung back up to his feet.

Leo dusted off his hands. "Not bad, not bad at all. You're thinking on your feet, switching up your style and utilzing strategy. I'm proud of you Derrick."

"Thanks a lot, dad." Derrick responded and performed a few stretches before he got ready for the next round.

"Alright, then son. I'm coming after you this time. Try and keep up."

"Bring it."

Leo advanced on his son with a few punches aimed at his face that Derrick blocked only for Leo to quickly switch it up for a body blow that Derrick deflected followed by a kick to his side that Derrick shut down. Leo smiled and quickly followed this up with a kick from his other leg that sent him flying off the mat. "You alright there, son?"

"Just fine dad!" Derrick laughed as he sat up rubbing his side.

"Just give it a minute and the pain will subside and we can continue."

"You got it."

As Derrick rested he could feel the pain subsiding in his body and he quickly got back on his feet and got back on the mat.

"Are you ready to continue?"

"Yes sir!" Derrick replied and rushed his dad and leaped into the air to strike him only for Leo hit him out of the air but this time Derrick grabbed his hand, fell back and wrapped his legs around his dad's arm and put him in a hold! Leo laughed. "An armbar huh? Very clever." He complimented his son and stood back up straight while grabbing his son's face with his hand while unwrapping his son's leg from his arm with his other hand, stomping down, smiling and swinging his son around in a circle before releasing him and throwing him away! Derrick yelled out as he was flung across the mat and down on the floor. He quickly recovered again however and scrambled back to his feet and went after his dad again. He went in with a leaping double kick that Leo pushed down with ease. Derrick then dropped down and tried to sweep his legs but Leo just stepped over it. Derrick sprung back up and kicked at his dad's face which Leo leaned back to dodge but Derrick quickly followed it up with another kick also aimed at his head. Leo blocked and shut it down and Derrick put some distance between them only for Leo to quickly close in and throw a quick strike at his head that Derrick dodged. He grabbed onto his arm, turned and threw his dad over his shoulder only for Leo to flip in the air and twist and land on his feet.

Derrick just laughed and attacked him again.

They continued this song and dance for the next two hours before they finally stopped for a break and sat down on the mat with bottles of ice water. "Ohhhh maaaan."

"Don't be so down on yourself, Derrick. You're getting better every day. You just have to keep at it. Proper diet, training, practice and exercise are the keys to success."

"You know it dad! I just have to keep at it." He enjoyed some ice water. "We're doing jogging next, right?"

"Right. We're doing the 56,000 today. 35 laps around the track and then we'll take another break."

"You got it." Derrick relaxed and looked into his water bottle. "I can do it. I'll take whatever you can throw at me dad. I won't be a burden like I was at the farm."

"Hey don't be so hard on yourself. You did great there. You and Tina freed yourselves and others and you even came up with a brilliant way to save the civilians completely on your own. You even threw down with a powerful metahuman and held your own. You kids weren't a burden. You are a blessing and don't ever tell yourselves different."

"Thanks, dad." They sat together until they recovered their stamina and finished their drinks. After wiping down the mat they exited the room and walked out to a track. They refilled their drinks and set them down in a cooler and walked onto the track and warmed up.

"Alright you ready Derrick?"

"Lets do it!"

They took off in a fast jog together.

"Alright you ready Derrick?"

"Lets do it!"

They took off in a fast jog together.

Father and son jogged around the long long track together, long enough that one lap was the equivalent of a mile, for lap after lap after lap to make it to the 35 laps goal. Initially it wasn't a problem for Derrick at all. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 laps. Not a problem. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 laps. Derrick was starting to feel it a little. 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25. Derrick was definitely starting to feel it now! He'd been jogging for twenty-five miles so far and he still had ten more to go! He still didn't stop. He would never stop. He pushed that out of his mind. He'd asked for this. Literally. He'd practically begged his dad to take him here to train and he'd been doing so for months. It was hard, sure, but every time he even started to think about training his mind drifted back to The Brannon Farm Guest House where everybody else was fighting to the death to protect them while Derrick cowered in a room unable to help or fight. Sure, he'd eventually managed to help in a different way but for most of the night he'd been forced to listen to the shooting and screaming while cursing his powerlessness. Whenever those thoughts drifted back to the surface a fire lit up in his heart and he started pushing himself even harder. 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. Almost there. Almost there. Almost there. Thirty-three miles so far! He calmed down and focused his breathing and maintained his rhythm. He kept going and going and going, keeping pace with his father. Outrunning his past. Outrunning his weakness. He kept going and going until he finished the last two miles. 34. 35. DONE! Derrick finished the last mile and doubled over gasping for breath as sweat dripped down his face. Enhanced or not, running for 35 miles was rough.

Leo stopped running and jogged back over to his son. "How you feeling?"

Derrick recovered enough to give his dad a thumb's up. "Super duper, dad." He laughed and recovered. Derrick straightened back up and focused his breathing as his stamina began to return. "Okay, yeah, that was fun."

"Feels good doesn't it?"

"Feels really good." He grinned. "Lets see, that's about....56, 327 meters, right?"

"That's right. 35 miles comes out to 56, 327 meters." He placed a hand on his son's shoulder. "I'm proud of you son."

"Thanks dad. Come on. Lets go get some water."

"Speaking my language, kiddo!"

Father and son laughed and walked over to the benches. "I wonder how much fun Tina's having right now."
